Science Minister, Architect Yeafesh Osman delivers Inaugural Speech in APRSAF Space Education Seminar

Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) is an organization engaged in providing cooperation with space technologies and its applications among its member countries. It arranges Space Education Seminar in different countries to create space awareness among the school students and teachers. During the 16th Session of APRSAF held in Bangkok on 26-29 January, 2010, APRSAF Space Education and Awareness Working Group (SEA WG) took a decision to organize its next Seminar in Bangladesh.

Jointly organized by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Bangladesh Astronomical Society, (BAS), APRSAF Space Education Seminar in Bangladesh was held on 17-19 January, 2011.

APRSAF Space Education Seminar, the First of its kind in the history of Bangladesh was held in the Auditorium of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novotheatre, Dhaka, on 17-18 January and in the High School Play Ground at Enayetpur, on 19 January.

Architect Yeafesh Osman , the State Minister for Science and Information and Communication Technology, Government of Bangladesh. In his Inaugural speech, the Minister thanked the organizers of this Seminar and assured that his Government would take appropriate plan to accelerate Space Education in Bangladesh . It was attended by eminent scientists and educationists including 125 Secondary School Teachers coming from different locations of Bangladesh.

The Seminar urged upon the Government immediately to set up “ Bangladesh Space Agency” to gear up Space Education and Awareness activities as well as research and development of space technologies and its applications in Bangladesh enabling our younger generations to reap benefits from this emerging sector.

During the time of the Seminar, Ms. Yolanda Berenguer , on behalf of UNESCO offered a Telescope to Bangladesh Astronomical Society. It was handed over to Dr.A. R. Khan, President, (BAS) by Mr. Derek Elias, Head of UNESCO , Bangladesh.

0n 18 January, a Hands-on Session was held on the 2nd floor of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novotheatre in which JAXA Officials trained 125 Teachers how to build up Plastic Rockets. These Rockers, Kits, Instructions Manuals etc were distributed among the participating Teachers to teach their students .

The most spectacular event of APRSAF Space Education Seminar was held on 19 January in the High School play ground at Enayetpur, the Space Village, where about 4,000 Students and Teachers from 20 schools had participated. Ms. Yolanda Berenguer, Dr. Takashi Kubota, Mr. Tetsuo Hiraiwa, Mr. Eijiro Hirohama, Dr. A.R. Khan and Mr. F. R. Sarker delivered their lectures. It was a Hands-on Session. Students were shown how to build up Plastic Rockets and these were distributed among 3,000 students. Education Centre (JAXA) helped demonstrations of the kits and posters . Both JAXA and UNESCO Officials were surprised to see such a huge numbers of students and teachers participating in this Space congregation and frankly told that they have never seen such type of gathering of space enthusiasts before. JAXA officials were exceedingly pleased and excited to interact with the students and they assured that they will offer all out cooperation for Space Education activities in Bangladesh - which will begin from Enayetpur.
