CELEBRATION OF WORLD SPACE WEEK-2012 AT ENAYETPUR, BANGLADESH

World Space Week is a Programme of the United Nations, celebrated annually between 4 and 10 October aimed at creating Space Awareness among the School Students around the World. It is coordinated by World Space Week Association based in Houston, USA. Since 2003, Bangladesh Astronomical Society has been regularly celebrating the World Space Week and its main Event is held at Enayetpur, a village which lies about 80 miles northwest of Dhaka.

The Celebration of World Space Week 2012 was held at Enayetpur on 5-6

Space Art Contests in the lawn of Mohakash Bhaban

October and it was dedicated in the memory of Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the First Man to land on the surface of Moon.

On 5 October, at 09:00-11:00 Space Art Contest was held in the lawn of Mohakash Bhaban in which about 130 students took part and drew pictures about Exploration of Space. Simultaneously, Water Rocket Launch Contest was held on the Spur of River Jamuna in which about 24 Students had participated.

On 6 October, the Concluding Session of the WSW-2012 was held in the premises of Mohakash Bhaban in which about 2,500 Students with Teachers and Space Enthusiasts had taken part. The programme continued from 11:00 to 16:30.

At 10:30 a Spectacular Street Rally starting from Balur Math, paraded over the street of Enayetpur and converged in the venue of the Concluding Session. Students and Teachers wearing Caps, Badges and holding Placards of World Space Week 2012 in their hands, chanted slogans. A few young students carrying Models of Rockets strode in front of the Rally. a unique and spectacular Street Rally with highest numbers of participants so far.

At 11:00 the Concluding Session of World Space Week - 2012 started.

In the beginning, all the Participants in the Session stood up and maintained silence for One Minute paying respect to the departed soul of Astronaut Neil Armstrong who died on 25th August of this year.

Armstrong in Dhaka on 27th October 1969 during the time of Apollo-11 Mission Astronauts Goodwill Tour around the world. A video of Apollo-11 Mission was also displayed and its descriptions were translated in Bengali Language by him. Participants were amazed to see Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to land and to walk on the surface of the Moon as many of them had never seen such Video in their Life.

Then there was another interesting event in which 5 Kids dressed with uniform of Space Shuttle Astronauts, paraded on the Stage for a few minutes so nicely that audience burst into laughters for their excellent performances.

The Concluding Session was made with lots of events like Space Debate, Space Quizz, Space Lecture in which students took part and felt them happy. At the end, successful Contestants were awarded Prizes.

Since 2003, Bangladesh Astronomical Society has been Celebrating World Space Week and WSW-2012 will be the completion of 10th Anniversary of Celebration of

World Space Week in Bangladesh. Day by day the numbers of participants are increasing suggesting that, Students, Teachers and General Public in the village of Enayetpur and its adjascent areas have

Kid Astronauts wearing Space Suits are waving their hands on the Stage

developed an exceptional fascination for Space. This year, the numbers of participants were so bigger that, hundreds of students had to go back due to shortage of space for them in the premises of Mohakash Bhaban. It is now clear that, in future more bigger area will be needed to accommodate participants in the Celebration of World Space Week at Enayetpur.
